Spreading Awareness: Parthenium Awareness Week 2025 at Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences

16th to 22nd August, 2025

The Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences, under the guidance of Chairman Shri Suresh Singh Bhadoria and Vice Chairman Mr. Mayankraj Singh Bhadoria, successfully observed Parthenium Awareness Week from 16th to 22nd August 2025, engaging both students and local farmers in a series of educational and action-oriented activities. Parthenium, commonly known as Gajarghas, has emerged as a significant threat to agriculture, the environment, and human and animal health across India. Once confined to wastelands and roadside areas, this invasive weed has rapidly spread into food crops, vegetable gardens, and horticultural fields, posing a serious risk to biodiversity and crop productivity. Recognizing the urgent need for awareness and management, the Institute organized various events to educate participants about the identification, harmful effects, and control measures of Parthenium.

During the week-long observance, the Institute facilitated interactive sessions, workshops, and lectures aimed at imparting scientific knowledge about Parthenium management. Farmers and students actively participated in field demonstrations, eradication drives, and bio-control insect distribution programs, which highlighted practical methods to control the spread of this invasive weed. In addition, rallies and awareness campaigns were conducted to sensitize the local community about the health risks associated with Parthenium and its adverse impact on agricultural productivity. Resource persons from the Institute guided participants in understanding eco-friendly and sustainable management techniques, fostering a sense of responsibility toward environmental conservation.

The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from 50 farmers and 85 students, reflecting the growing awareness and commitment of the community toward tackling this challenge. By combining educational outreach with practical action, the Index Institute of Agricultural Sciences contributed significantly to the nationwide campaign under the leadership of the ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur. With the active support of Chairman Shri Suresh Singh Bhadoria and Vice Chairman Mr. Mayankraj Singh Bhadoria, the event strengthened community engagement and inspired participants to adopt proactive measures for weed management in their local areas. Through such awareness programs, the Institute continues to promote sustainable agricultural practices and safeguard the health of both the environment and society.
